What office are you running for?
Board of Commissioners
Please share with us a short personal/professional biography:
I grew up out west in the state of Oregon. My father passed away when I was very young so I was raised by a single mother. Because we did not have much in the way of finances I learned to not only work hard but to work smart. I spent a few years working and going to college and then decided to be patriotic and I joined the US Air Force. I graduated from the U.S. Air Force’s technical school with a degree in electronics and avionic instruments. At the end of my 4 years I married my husband and we started our family shortly after. I stayed home for several years to raise our children and then joined the workforce again. I worked in the electronic field for a few years and then decided to follow one of my dreams and become a real estate agent. I have been doing real estate for the past 12 years. My business experience has helped me and allowed me to put to use the early values that my mother taught me about being frugal and wise with my finances. I would like to take that experience and put it to use for our town.
Most important organizations you belong to (up to three):
CAMPAIGN FOR WORKING FAMILIES: This organization is committed to help keeping family values in our schools, government, and our nation, lower taxes, and accountability for our elected and non-elected officials.
MY LOCAL CHURCH: A church is a great way to band together with other people to encourage one another. It is also a great way to reach out and help meet the needs of our local community whether it is through food banks, housing the homeless, helping unwed mothers, etc…
BOARD OF REALTORS: I have served on numerous committees including the fair housing committee. One of the goals of the Realtor organization is to keep taxes low and housing affordable for all.
List up to three (3) of your most important political/civic accomplishments in the last five (5) years:
1. Organizer- Support The Troops Rally: After 9/11 my husband was activated by the Air Natn’l Gaurd. I saw a need to reach out to the families that were left behind and to those that were sent away to help in the war effort. I wanted them to know that they were not alone, we were standing with them.
2. Homeless Women Shelter / Leader: Served at local church in housing Charlotte’s homeless women sponsored by the Salvation Army.
3. Executived Board of the NY Conservative Party: They have been a strong voice in keeping values and intregity in the political arena.
Why are you running for the office of your choice?
I believe we live in a great nation where the average citizen can have a voice. But unfortanately too many elected officials forget what the word representative means. They have lost site that they must continually keep themselves engaged with their constituents. If we want to have an effect in our nations direction I believe we need to start from the Town level up. We can make a difference if we get involved. I would like to see a written priority list for the town of Huntersville look something like this:
1. PUBLIC SAFETY: POLICE/FIRE/EMERGENCY
2. ROADS/SCHOOLS
3. ATTRACTING AND KEEPING BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY
4. QUALITY OF LIFE: PARKS AND RECS/PROGRAMS, SIDWALKS & BIKE PATHS
What makes you the most qualified candidate?
I don’t believe qualification is the only thing we should be looking for in our leaders. I believe we should be looking at the persons past experiences but not stop there. What value system does that person have and what will guide how they act and vote once on the board. I believe that government belongs to the people not to elected officials. I believe in making myself available to hear from the residents that would elect me as well as make ways to keep myself and the other board members accountable for how we spend the precious money that our residents entrust us with. I served as the county coordinator for a US Congressman because I believed in the values that he stood for. I am currently a NC state delegate as well as a local precinct chair. I have political experience but that is not what qualifies me. I believe it is my strong belief that government belongs to the people and my commitment to keep myself and the others on the board accessible and accountable.
What regional issue do you believe most affects your municipality (such as crime, roads, schools, etc.) and what role do you believe your municipality can play in improving it?
I believe there is more than one issue. We have overcrowded schools, overcrowded roads, and the need for a police department that meets our growing needs. Again, we must have a clear vision with a set of written priorities. And we must improve the way the public knows and interacts with the town board in order to keep it on track and accountable for every vote and dollar spent.
Do you believe there could be better collaboration among the municipalities in Mecklenburg County? If so, what would you suggest to improve it?
I absolutely do. I would like to see quarterly meetings between the town boards of Davidson, Cornelius, and Huntersville. We could choose 2 representatives a month from each town to discuss how we can better pool our resources and improve our communities.
