Twitter name or URL:: Reelectnancy
Current Occupation:: Law office manager/senior paralegal
Education–Highest Degree:: Two Associate’s Degrees
What office are you running for?: Town Council
Please share with us a short personal/professional biography:: I am a Massachusetts native and relocated to Matthews in May 1996. I became involved with Matthews politics in 1997 and have remained involved on a local level, as well as county level, ever since. I earned my paralegal degree in 1987 and a certificate in travel and tourism in 1998. I am also certified through the Aerobics & Fitness Association of America as a personal trainer.
I am currently employed as the firm administrator/senior paralegal at the Vann Law Firm in Matthews.
I am a resident of Brightmoor, having purchased my house in 2005. I previously owned a house in Pine Forest, and prior to that, was an apartment dweller. I have two sons, Stephan, age 20, and Mitchell, age 17. I recently became engaged to Craig Moore, also of Matthews.
Most important organizations you belong to (up to three):: I was appointed board liaison to the Arts & Science Council Board of Directors in January 2008. I currently serve on the Matthews Economic Development Advisory Committee and the Clark House Committee. Other committee involvement is listed below.
List up to three (3) of your most important political/civic accomplishments in the last five (5) years:: I believe the successes and accomplishments of our town council are a result of the council itself, working together as a team, not one individual. For example, I am very proud of the fact that the current town council defined and endorsed the alignment of the greenway. This will be a huge asset to current and future residents of Matthews.
We have not laid off any employees, nor have we required a furlough. This is a major accomplishment in this economy.
Another success for the town was instituting paid positions in our fire department. While we very strongly rely on and appreciate our volunteers, it is comforting to know that firefighters are on their way within seconds of the call being received.
Why are you running for the office of your choice?: I am finishing my first term and believe that I need to continue the work I have started. I initially ran for this office because I have a passion for Matthews and ensuring that Matthews retains what makes it a great place to live and work.
What makes you the most qualified candidate?: Comparing qualifications is difficult when serving with more experienced incumbents (Commissioners Query and Gulley). When comparing the candidates overall, I believe that I have a very strong background in local government, as well as civic involvement. I was first appointed to the Mayoral Task Force on Education in 1997. I served on the task force for approximately two years, until its dissolution. Shortly thereafter, I was appointed to the Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee. After serving for approximately a year, I was voted Committee Chair and served in that position until rotating off the committee. After a one-year hiatus, I was appointed to the Mecklenburg County Therapeutic Recreation Advisory Committee and served three years. Currently, as stated earlier, I am the town liaison to the Arts & Science Council Board of Directors and I serve on the following committees: the town’s Economic Development Advisory Committee; the Clark House Committee; Matthews Chamber of Commerce Small Business Committee; and the Armed Forces Museum Grant Writing Committee. I am the former Committee Chair of Cub Scout Pack 214 through Matthews United Methodist Church.
I am highly visible in the community and easily accessible. I believe this is extremely important. Residents need to know who is representing them and working on their behalf. They need to know that council members are available via telephone, e-mail, or in person. They need to feel comfortable in contacting their elected officials.
What regional issue do you believe most affects your municipality (such as crime, roads, schools, etc.) and what role do you believe your municipality can play in improving it?: While some may not agree, I find that, when I ask Matthews residents what they feel is the most important issue facing Matthews, they overwhelmingly say traffic. I like to tell people that if we’re worried about traffic, we have it pretty good. If crime was our number one issue, that would be another story.
I have long been a proponent of redirecting traffic around Matthews, rather than through it. I support extending McKee Road, crossing John Street (Old Monroe Road), and terminating on Independence Boulevard. This will aid in moving Union County traffic off of Matthews city streets.
Do you believe there could be better collaboration among the municipalities in Mecklenburg County? If so, what would you suggest to improve it?: In my opinion, the town of Matthews gets along very well with its neighbors. Our council members serve on committees alongside commissioners from Mint Hill, Pineville, Huntersville, Cornelius, Charlotte, and Davidson. There is ongoing communication and collaboration between municipalities.
How can residents get involved in your campaign? Please include campaign manager or volunteer coordinator’s contact information.: Campaign contributions are of the utmost importance. I am proud of the fact that my last campaign was done on a shoestring budget. This time around, I am hoping to do the same.
Contributions can be mailed to:
H. Clark Holmes, Jr., Treasurer
Campaign to Re-Elect Nancy R. LaFond
3017 Laurelwood Drive
Matthews, NC 28105-0869
In addition, meet and greets are vital to getting to know people and them getting to know me. I am always looking for help with sign placement and appreciate any assistance.
