What office are you running for?: Board of Commissioners

Please share with us a short personal/professional biography:: Mint Hill became my home in 1967 when I moved “to the country” with my family. I am a graduate of Independence High School (Class of ’71) and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters in Education. I was married to the late Steve Ross (my high school sweetheart) for 27 years, and to Tom Duke for the last five years. Between us we have four children: Allyson, Erin, Julie, and Bryan. I am a retired CMS educator, and now spend the majority of my time volunteering with numerous community organizations.

Most important organizations you belong to (up to three):: In addition to many church activities, I serve on the Levine Senior Center Board of Directors, a truly gratifying experience. Additionally, I serve as a Trustee of the Mint Hill Historical Society, where I have been involved since its inception. As the town’s appointee to the Arts and Science Council Board of Directors, I have many opportunities to promote cultural activities and opportunities in the Mint Hill area.

List up to three (3) of your most important political/civic accomplishments in the last five (5) years:: The Town of Mint Hill presented the fifth annual Sunday Afternoon in the Park just a few weeks ago. The vision behind the free arts festival was mine, and I have nurtured and coordinated the event since its inception. The June Tunes concert series was another product of my vision that the citizens of Mint Hill and surrounding areas have embraced. (My son actually designed the logos for both events.) I take pride in working to provide Mint Hillians with opportunities to experience cultural activities in their own town.

Why are you running for the office of your choice?: My family has a history of public service and I am proud to continue that legacy. As a teacher in the public schools and as a dedicated community volunteer, I have been able to give back to my community. I am running for re-election to the office of Commissioner to continue to serve the people of Mint Hill. I am pleased to have provided a “listening ear” to citizens who may not have had one previously, as well as provide a voice for those who often go unheard. I enjoy helping people and solving problems; serving as an elected official allows me to do both.

What makes you the most qualified candidate?: I believe the record will indicate that I am an independent thinker, someone who appreciates diverse input, and that I have a willingness to evaluate positions other than my own. I am tenacious and conscientious. Probably most importantly, I have the willingness and desire to devote the time necessary to effectively serve as a Mint Hill Commissioner.

What regional issue do you believe most affects your municipality (such as crime, roads, schools, etc.) and what role do you believe your municipality can play in improving it?: Since we are in such close proximity to two counties, much could be gained by strengthening working relationships in several areas. We have made strides in supporting multi-jurisdictional transportation committees (ex.: MUMPO,) but we need to work more closely in other areas, particularly in fighting crime. Mint Hill could initiate plans for a regional crime force to share information that could reduce crime in Mint Hill as well as neighboring towns.

Do you believe there could be better collaboration among the municipalities in Mecklenburg County? If so, what would you suggest to improve it?: Mecklenburg municipalities generally meet annually to discuss legislative issues and concerns. I would suggest quarterly meetings involving all elected officials which would provide the opportunity for quicker response time in dealing with issues. It would also be beneficial to host forums on topics of mutual concern on a regular basis.

How can residents get involved in your campaign? Please include campaign manager or volunteer coordinator’s contact information.: Residents can get involved in my campaign in several ways: host a yard sign, sponsor a “meet and greet,” distribute literature, work the polls on Election Day, or make a financial contribution. To volunteer, just e-mail me or call me at 704-545-6231.
