What office are you running for?: Mayor

Please share with us a short personal/professional biography::I was born and raised in Mecklenburg County and graduated from CMS schools. I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a B.A. degree in Political Science. I have been married to my wife Liz for 34 years and have three children who grew up in Mint Hill, Alexis-26, Alice-21, and Teddy-16. After college I served as a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force for over 7 years. I have been an airline pilot for 29 years and I am employed with US Airways in Charlotte. I was first elected to the Mint Hill Board of Commissioners in 1997 and served one term as Mayor Pro-Tem. I was elected Mayor of Mint Hill in 1999 and have served for 10 years.

Most important organizations you belong to (up to three)::I am an active adult leader with the Boy Scouts of America, serving as the Chartered Organization Representative of Troop 65 of Philadelphia Presbyterian Church. I am Mint Hill’s representative to the Mecklenburg Union Metropolitan Planning Organization. I also serve as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Queens Grant Community School.

List up to three (3) of your most important political/civic accomplishments in the last five (5) years::Established Queens Grant Prepartory High School, a charter high school located within Mint Hill’s town limits. Helped and supported the evolution of the Mint Hill Business Association into the Mint Hill Chamber of Commerce. Helped to maintain the lowest municipal tax rate in Mecklenburg County.

Why are you running for the office of your choice?: I am running for re-election to continue to serve the citizens of Mint Hill and to assure we maintain a small town feel while demanding high quality growth.

What makes you the most qualified candidate?: Leadership and experience. I have held many positions of leadership for years ( Boy Scouts, U.S. Air Force, athletics, church, and other community activities). I have 12 years of experience serving on the Mint Hill Board of Commissioners. I have developed a good working relationship with other local and state officials. I believe the citizens of Mint Hill trust my leadership.

What regional issue do you believe most affects your municipality (such as crime, roads, schools, etc.) and what role do you believe your municipality can play in improving it?: Because Mint Hill is located in Mecklenburg County, schools, roads, and crime are all regional issues that have a major effect on our town. The community must continue to support the schools our children attend. We must continue to work with state local officials to address our transportation needs and we must support our police department in combating any rise in crime.

Do you believe there could be better collaboration among the municipalities in Mecklenburg County? If so, what would you suggest to improve it?: I believe the municipalities collaborate well. Mint Hill, Matthews, and Pinevile have very good working relationships. Still, all seven towns could do better job of communicating with each other. We should seek dialog and support each other in dealing with regional issues.
