What office are you running for?: Board of Commissioners

Please share with us a short personal/professional biography::I grew up in a small town in northern Ohio, on the shores of Lake Erie. I graduated from Ohio State in 1989 with a BS degree focusing on Transportation & Logistics and moved to southern Georgia to begin my career with Frito-Lay. After moving around the south with a few different companies, my wife and I decided to settle in Davidson, NC. We have three active children, one at Bailey Middle and two at Davidson Elementary. Today, I own a small logistics technology business where I have an office on Main Street in Davidson.

List up to three (3) of your most important political/civic accomplishments in the last five (5) years::I served a full 3-year term and was the Chair for our School Leadership Team at Davidson Elementary. During that time we managed through two principal transitions (successfully) and worked with the PTA to develop numerous programs at the school.

I also served a full 3-year term on the board for Downtown Davidson, Inc., a non-profit organization focused on improving, promoting and preserving downtown Davidson. During that 3-year span: we transitioned to acquire 501-c3 status, hired a new executive director, established “April is for the Arts”, helped birth the Davidson Farmer’s Market, and tied in “Exit 30″ expansion…all while remaining cash-flow neutral.

Why are you running for the office of your choice?: Davidson is home. I have three children that will one day say “I grew up in Davidson, NC.” I want them to be proud of their hometown…now and in the future. Running for a town board position gives me the opportunity to contribute to that goal.

What makes you the most qualified candidate?: 1. I believe I can relate well with many families in Davidson. I am a younger parent of three, with one child at Bailey Middle School and two children at Davidson Elementary where I spent the last three years on the School Leadership Team (SLT). (I may be the only parent with a child at either school, let alone both.)

2. I also recently served a full term on the executive committee for Downtown Davidson, Inc., a non-profit organization whose focus was to improve, preserve and promote downtown Davidson as a commercial, cultural and social center.

3. I am a property owner on Main Street in Davidson.

4. Lastly, as an entrepreneur, I have started a few companies, managing all aspects of a small business…much like the responsibilities of a Town Board.

What regional issue do you believe most affects your municipality (such as crime, roads, schools, etc.) and what role do you believe your municipality can play in improving it?: The weaknesses of the economy that our nation faces is no different than what we face here at home. We need to continue to be good stewards with our finances ensuring budgets are created smartly and adhered to accordingly. We need to encourage our citizens to reach out to the town when they see opportunities for efficiencies.

Do you believe there could be better collaboration among the municipalities in Mecklenburg County? If so, what would you suggest to improve it?: There is always room for improvement, but I think the region has made great strides in the past few years to reach out and work with our neighbors; whether it be about transit, affordable housing, lake issues, or economic development. As the efforts toward collaboration continue to grow, it is important not to spread our resources too thin, we need to concentrate on these relationships and work to strengthen the current teams.
