Most important organizations you belong to (up to three): I belong to the Larry King Clubhouse Board of Directors, John S. Leary Bar Association, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Each one provides a vehicle for me to give back to children, better the community, and interact with like-minded, goal-oriented individuals.
List up to three (3) of your most important political/civic accomplishments in the last five (5) years. (150 word limit): My most important political/civic accomplishments are completing the Bar Leadership Institute (B.L.I.) and running in this campaign for District Court Judge. B.L.I. grouped me with 14 other members of the County Bar, selected from a large number of applicants. I learned about getting involved in different civic organizations and developing the skills and qualities required in becoming leaders in this community. B.L.I. gave me the confidence to recognize and believe in my talents and the courage to seek a District Court Judge seat. Regardless of the outcome of this election, I am grateful for this journey and the opportunity to serve the citizens of this County.
What qualities, other than obvious fairness and impartiality, will you/do you bring to the bench that makes you a good judge? (150 word limit): I have the demeanor, dedication, and discretion to be a good judge. My demeanor is calm and patient. I am able to handle contentious situations and communicate well with court personnel despite our differences. I am dedicated to upholding the law and being a steward of the profession. Also, I pride myself on using discretion to make the proper decisions in my practice, as well as my life. These qualities will be important to being a judge that listens to the evidence, doesn’t rush to judgment, operates with integrity, and is focused on seeking the truth.
How has the state budget crisis affected the judicial process in recent years? (200 word limit): The state budget crisis has caused an increase in court fees, limited affordable options for diversionary programs, prevented technological growth in the District Attorney’s office and other court affiliated offices, and halted the hiring of more court officials necessary to improving the efficiency of the judicial process. Although an increase in funding is not the “cure” for what ails the judicial system, it is important for providing resources and maintaining fairness for all people despite their socioeconomic status.
How can residents get involved in your campaign? Please include campaign manager or volunteer coordinator’s contact information.: Residents can visit my website and select ways to volunteer. We need people to make phone calls, post yard signs, and work poll site locations. Also, they can call/email me and I or someone else will contact them.
