Current Occupation: Court of Appeals Judge
Education–Highest Degree: Juris Doctorate, UNC- Law
Most important organizations you belong to (up to three): Healthy Start Board,
Lake James State Park Advisory Committee,
First Baptist Church of Marion, NC
List up to three (3) of your most important political/civic accomplishments in the last five (5) years. (150 word limit): In my last re-election to the NC Court of Appeals, I was honored to receive a huge vote of confidence from my fellow North Carolinians when I carried 99 of NC’s 100 counties.
I was lucky enough to be elected to the rare position of Director Emeritus by the good folks at Healthy Start.
Generally, my decisions from the bench have been very well received by people of all political persuasions, and I have received a great deal of bipartisan support for my election to the NC Supreme Court
What qualities, other than obvious fairness and impartiality, will you/do you bring to the bench that makes you a good judge? (150 word limit): I am the most experienced candidate in the race, having been a Judge on the Court of Appeals for the past 12 years. I have decided over 3600 cases and written over 1200 opinions. I have been a small business owner, attorney, prosecutor, NC Representative, and Appellate Judge. I have the experience and perspective needed for the Supreme Court.
I am proud to have earned a reputation as one of the hardest working judges on the Court of Appeals, rendering thoughtful decisions grounded in common sense.
Perhaps for these reasons, I have received every major endorsement in this race, including 3 former Chief Justices, among many others.
How has the state budget crisis affected the judicial process in recent years? (200 word limit): This coequal branch of government receives less than 3% of the state budget. While it is desirable to minimize the cost of the Courts on taxpayers, funding cuts have made it very difficult for Clerks of Court to maintain adequate staffing to allow for equal access to our Judicial system.
