Most important organizations you belong to (up to three): Professional organizations: N. C. Courts Commission; the N. C. Bar Association; and the Wake County Bar Association.
List up to three (3) of your most important political/civic accomplishments in the last five (5) years. (150 word limit): Being endorsed by three former Chief Justices of the N. C. Supreme Court and two former Chief Judges of the N. C. Court of Appeals in my current campaign for the Court of Appeals; appointment to the N. C. Courts Commission by Chief Justice Sarah Parker; and being elected a Vice President of the N. C. Bar Association.
What qualities, other than obvious fairness and impartiality, will you/do you bring to the bench that makes you a good judge? (150 word limit): I bring a strong work ethic to the bench and work many extra hours to get the job done. I do my very best to make sure each party before me knows I am giving them my undivided attention. Each case matters to me, no matter how simple or complex the issues are. It is my job to be patient and listen and I am often told that I do this very well. It is a goal I strive for every day. I may not rule in your favor, but you know you have been heard.
How has the state budget crisis affected the judicial process in recent years? (200 word limit): The share of the state budget for the Judicial Branch is a little over 2%. Approximately 96% of the Judicial branch budget is for personnel, so when budget cuts are demanded by the General Assembly, it usually means position cuts. When you operate a service agency, personnel cuts mean court improvement programs are the first to go because the focus has to be on core functions. It makes it very difficult to be innovative and creative. The co-equal third branch of government deserves a larger share of the state budget (at least 3%) in order to help protect the citizens of North Carolina and make sure justice is meted out fairly and swiftly.
