Twitter name or URL: AndrewMurray4DA
Current Occupation: Attorney
Education–Highest Degree: J.D.; University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Most important organizations you belong to (up to three): United States Coast Guard Reserve, North Carolina State Bar, Lake Norman Christian School Board of Directors
List up to three (3) of your most important political/civic accomplishments in the last five (5) years. (150 word limit): As a Coast Guard Reservist I have been involved in numerous emergency and law enforcement operations in my career. Over the course of my career I have trained and lead a group of dedicated young men and women to protect our country and effectively respond to both manmade and natural disasters. I have been directly involved and served this great country with distinction during three catastrophic periods of our recent history; the Deepwater Horizon Gulf oil Spill, the rescue and response effort surrounding Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In all of these efforts I lead highly trained Coast Guard Reservists to protect our borders and make a difference by providing humanitarian relief in devastated areas of our great country.
How does your education and experience prepare you to manage the District Attorney’s office? (150 word limit): My 18 years practicing criminal law and 29 years in the Coast Guard have equipped me to be an effective leader and manager of an office comprised of over 80 assistant district attorneys and 60 support staff. The District Attorney must be able to effectively prosecute criminal cases and manage a large office staff. My management experience as Senior Reserve Officer at Sector Charleston in command of over 250+ Coast Guard reservists will enable me to effectively evaluate talent, delegate responsibility and equip and train trial attorneys. In addition, my trial experience will enable me to identify talent and place good people into leadership positions as well as implement programs to better train young DA’s. The District Attorney must be a proven and effective leader and trial attorney; it is not a job for a politician with no criminal trial experience.
If elected, what changes do you plan to make in the district attorney’s office? (200 word limit): I plan to do three things:
1. I intend to enact an Initial Appearance team to effectively advocate for high bonds on targeted defendants. This team will collect pertinent information on criminal defendants and identify defendants that do not need to be back on the streets. By effectively advocating for higher bonds we will be able to keep many targeted offenders from re-offending while out on bond.
2. My team, and myself, will form a Community Liaison team that will have DA’s assigned to specific areas within the community. These team members will attend neighborhood and community meetings with the Police. They will provide information from my office and relay the concerns and criticisms of the community to me and my teams so I can quickly and appropriately identify the needs of the community and tailor the policies of the office accordingly.
3. I intend to effectively lead and invigorate the office to do the job that the public expects and that is vigorously “prosecute criminals.” I intend to collaborate with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to simply get the job done as a unified team. The public should demand nothing less.
How can residents get involved in your campaign? Please include campaign manager or volunteer coordinator’s contact information.: Residents can immediately get involved by speaking to your neighbors and friends about my candidacy and encouraging them to go to my website at www.andrewmurrayforda.com to learn more about what the real needs of the District Attorney’s office are and why I know that I am the best candidate for Mecklenburg County. If they wish to volunteer they can contact my Executive Director Larry Shaheen at volunteer@AndrewMurrayforDA.com and help make Mecklenburg County a safer and more secure community by electing Andrew Murray as your next District Attorney.
