E-mail: jenaculler@bellsouth.net
Phone Number: 704-236-1843
Current Occupation: District Court Judge
Education–Highest Degree: Juris Doctor (Law Degree)
Most important organizations you belong to (up to three): Providence United Methodist Church
Mecklenburg County Bar
Charlotte Mothers of Multiples
List up to three (3) of your most important political/civic accomplishments in the last five (5) years. (150 word limit): I was appointed to the District Court bench in 2008 by the Governor after being selected as a nominee by the vote of my peers, the Mecklenburg County Bar members.
What qualities, other than obvious fairness and impartiality, will you/do you bring to the bench that makes you a good judge? (150 word limit): I have twenty years of experience in Mecklenburg County District Courts. I have practiced law in every area of District Court; Civil, Criminal, Juvenile, and Family Courts. I have the work ethic to handle large cases loads efficiently, the patience to listen so that people have the opportunity to be heard, the integrity that the office commands, and the humility to not lose sight of how my decisions affect people’s lives. In addition to my years of legal experience, I have the years of life experience, including managing a law practice and raising children, that give me a sound common sense approach to decision making and problem solving.
How has the state budget crisis affected the judicial process in recent years? (200 word limit): The state budget crisis has had a tremendous effect on the judicial process. The entire state judicial system operates on less than 2% of the state’s entire budget. Some specific budget cuts in recent years eliminated positions with the Administrative Office of Courts, froze the filling of vacancies in the clerk’s offices and Trial Court Administrator’s offices, and eliminated pay for emergency judges for a time, just to name a few. During the same time, the court filings have increased, and there are more cases than ever to be heard in our courts.
Now more than ever, we need to keep experienced judges on the bench in Mecklenburg County. It takes years of experience to effectively balance handling large case loads efficiently with making sure everyone has their opportunity to be heard.
