Current Occupation: Mecklenburg County Senior Associate County Attorney
Education–Highest Degree: Juris Doctorate 1996, University of Mississippi School of Law
Most important organizations you belong to (up to three): New Birth Charlotte Tutorial Ministry and the NAACP
List up to three (3) of your most important political/civic accomplishments in the last five (5) years. (150 word limit): I served on the Women’s Leadership Team at The Park Ministries. While on this ministry, I was able to design and participate in programs that enhanced women’s lives. I successfully argued a case before the North Carolina Supreme Court that may have negatively impacted children involved within the Mecklenburg County Foster System.
What qualities, other than obvious fairness and impartiality, will you/do you bring to the bench that makes you a good judge? (150 word limit): I will continue exhibiting principles taught and demonstrated to me on a daily basis: “treat others the way I want to be treated” such that people will believe that justice is blind and does prevail in the end. I plan to incorporate the skills learned during my 14 years working in public service as well as the lessons learned while seeking assistance from the judicial system. Some terms used to define me are hardworking, dedicated, accountable, honest, strong, dependable, objective, independent, and a heart to serve. I am an individual who is not afraid to make tough decisions. All of these qualities working together lead to a better Mecklenburg County.
How has the state budget crisis affected the judicial process in recent years? (200 word limit): My opinion is derived from my experience as a practicing attorney. Due to the budget crisis, some attorneys have limitations regarding the amount and type of evidence presented during some hearings. Many of the service programs and speciality courts designed specifically to improve the quality of life for some Mecklenburg County residents have been limited. There has been a price increase for those seeking access to the judicial system; hence limiting equal access to justice.
